Why is it EVERYTHING changes when you have kids? But seriously for the better. Life as a whole has more meaning. You look at your own parents through a new lens. Everything just gets better, including Christmas. Christmas is just better.
All of these traditions are flooding my memory of when I was a child. I remember my dad turning on the boom box so LOUD we could hear Christmas music all through the house after we got home from picking out our Christmas tree. We would spend the rest of the day unpacking decorations and preparing the house for Christmas while my mom, dad and myself wrangled my three brothers.
Every year my grandmother would take me, one of her dear friends and all my girl cousins to the Nutcracker. For those of you that have visited my house during Christmas, this is why I have WAY too many all over my house. I buy one every year… and will again this year!
Every year our family would have a gingerbread house decorating competition. You guessed it, I won ALMOST every year. A few years back I had close to an anxiety attack because my creative juices were not flowing and literally couldn’t get anything on my board. My entire family STILL reminds me every year about how I choked. ONE YEAR guys, sometimes geniuses have bad days.. haha.
Christmas Eve, we would bake cookies and my dad would make powdered sugar icing in every color imaginable for Santa. It all makes sense to me now. My dad is a sugar cookie addict, he basically had his kids make his Christmas Eve midnight snack for him. Kuddos Dad.
Christmas is just better
I remember wrapping gifts with my mom, Christmas Eve candlelight services, riding in the car singing Dean Martin Christmas music with my grandmother and the excitement of all the family festivities. I don’t remember a lot of the gifts, but I remember the memories. I remember when my oldest little brother got his first truck on Christmas morning like it was yesterday and jumped about 5 feet in the air when he saw it. Those joys will last forever. I still get antsy while my parents open their gifts in hopes they will LOVE them!
Now that I have Olivia, Christmas is just better. All these traditions mean the world to me and I can’t wait to lock each little memory our family creates in my heart. I pray she learns the gift of giving. I pray she understands the true meaning of this season. I pray she always knows how she will make each Christmas just so much better.
This year, Liv is at the age where she can appreciate the trees, twinkle lights, and all my nutcrackers 🙂 (she LOVES them). So we spent two solid days listening to Christmas tunes, decorating and enjoying the joy of the season. This year has been by far my most favorite to decorate so I wanted to share it with each of you. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
