Being the oldest child, leading is in my DNA. I’m hardwired to take charge and get things done. Whether at work, at home, or in fashion, I want to be at the forefront, set an example, and make sure things stay in motion.
Sometimes it backfires on me though.
I neglect myself to try to make sure everyone around me is content. I forget or push aside my needs to make sure everything is taken care of. Leadership isn’t an easy path. If you want to be a leader, you have to take all the responsibility that comes with it. Andrew and I are both in the thick of this in our life. It’s not always glamorous.
So what can you do? Put yourself first. Make yourself your #1 priority. It’s not selfish to care for yourself, and it will make you a better leader in the long-run. And ALWAYS make sure you are leading the way YOU want to lead, not the way everyone else around you says you should. Be open to feedback – that is a good leadership quality – but listen to what your heart and your head are telling you.
Whether you’re leading a team at work, stepping up at home, or setting trends in fashion, take time for yourself, listen to yourself, and trust yourself. Be honest, confident, and open-minded and the people around you will emulate those qualities.
